Numeracy
At Donburn Primary School, we approach mathematics using a Problem Solving Based model, which creates authentic, rich experiences for students to connect mathematics to the real world. This model focuses on the 10 problem solving strategies students can draw on to solve any problem.
Units of learning are created based on the four proficiency strands which are paramount to the development of a child’s numeracy skillset.
At Donburn we use evidence based, best-practices to teach Numeracy for one hour a day. Learning programs are differentiated to teach students at their point of need, working collaboratively with their peers, in pairs or independently. Students are regularly assessed in a variety of ways to ascertain their understanding.
We are always improving our practice in Numeracy, working in the Maths Collaborative program, where teachers and school leaders work closely with scholars and researchers from Melbourne University and the Mathematical Association of Victoria to learn best-practice methods of instruction.
Donburn offers a range of maths opportunities for students to extend their learning including the Maths Olympiad, Maths Games program, Earn and Learn and UNSW Global Assessments.
